About the Recipe
Arepas are delicious corn-based patties, originating from Colombia and Venezuela. They can be stuffed with various fillings like Scrambled Eggs, Ham and Cheese, Guacamole, and Tuna Mayo. Basically, whatever you wished to fit in it.
Ingredients
300 grams of pre-cooked cornmeal (harina de maiz)
350 milliliters warm water
5 milliliters salt
15 milliliters of vegetable oil (for cooking)
Preparation
Step 1) Prepare the Dough
In a mixing bowl, combine lukewarm water and salt then gradually add the pre-cooked cornmeal.
mix it good until the dough feels soft and easy to shape.
Step 2) Shape the Arepas
Divide the dough into eight equal portions and roll each into a ball no bigger than the palm of your hand.
Flatten each ball into a patty about 1.25 centimeters thick.
Step 3) Cook the Arepas
Heat a non-stick pan or griddle over medium heat and add the vegetable oil.
Place the shaped arepas onto the skillet and cook for 5-6 minutes on each side or until golden brown and a crust forms.
Step 4) Serve and enjoy.
Once cooked, let the arepas cool slightly on some paper towels and for it to drain some left-over oil. Slice them open with a knife. Fill them with your choice of toppings or fillings like cheese, avocado, shredded meat, or beans.
